Fife Whisky Festival is returning for a second year in March of 2019. It takes place in The Corn Exchange in Cupar, which was built in 1862 and is the perfect venue for a whisky festival. With over 30 distilleries and independent bottlers from all over Scotland showcasing their whisky wares, there are loads of amazing drams to try. To celebrate the launch of early bird tickets, we were chosen to take part in a tweet tasting, sampling drams from around the area.
The Eden Mill Hip Flask Series is a collection of single cask whiskies created at Eden Mill Distillery to showcase a range of the impact of different barrel finishes on whisky.
Price: £25 for a 25cl bottle.
Appearance: Rich Dark Brown.
Aroma: Initially, I couldn’t get past the sherry on the nose of this dram. It’s thick, musty and atmospheric – something that is very evocative of whisky trips past and dunnages soaked in. As it sits in the glass and I force myself to find more flavours, there is christmassy clove aroma, a boozy, thick stone fruit aroma and a dark coffee grind twisting together.
Taste: This is a thick, viscous dream of a dram. The first notes are rich and fruity – Like sultanas soaked in sherry and baked into a rich, malty tea loaf. Then as those flavours wash away, in the middle, there is a dark treacle/molasses type flavour that develops and widens out the dram and reminds me of Soreen (Other malt loaves are available). Finally there is a short brown sugar sweetness and then the dram dies a glorious death.
Mouthfeel: Thick and Viscous.
Overall: I was incredibly surprised to find out that this whisky was only three years old. It was dynamic, rich and interesting. It reminded me of sherried Balblairs and I wanted to pick up a bottle. As for the festival, Early Bird Tickets are available for a limited time, costing £25. You can purchase them from here: https://fifewhiskyfestival.com/buy-tickets/
